Slasher movie fans call Herschell Gordon Lewis "The Godfather of Gore." He has Directed, written and produced more than 37 films in his career. Most of them in the 60's and 70's
Then he seemingly disappeared from the world of gore films. For 30 years, he built his reputation as an advertising man and today he is considered one of the world's leading authorities on direct response advertising, making more money a year than many of his films have grossed in their lifetime.
But even after his long absense, the infamous gore director has kept his love for film-making. The carnage-craving director can't stay away any longer. "Making movies is like Malaria" he says. "It gets in your blood and stays there."
His latest film, currently in post production is called "The Uh-Oh Show." The premise is about a hit game show where contestants win a lifetime of wealth if they answer the questions correctly... but get their limbs hacked off if they answer wrong.
This movie could only come from the twisted mind of Herschell Gordon Lewis
Recently, Herschell Gordon Lewis has become more mainstream, with a reverent reference in the award winning movie, "Juno." But his films themselves are anything but mainstream.
"The Uh-Oh Show will, I think, mark a change in the direction of this kind of movie," Lewis says. "Of late, a lot of these movies are derivative. You think you're seeing the same movie over and over again. I don't think they're going to think that when they see The Uh-Oh Show! We mix outrageous splatter effects with hot humor so everyone knows immediately that it's just a gag."
Lewis's fans come from every generation and lifestyle. The reactions are the same, regardless of background. Either audiences love it and find it disturbingly hilarious... or they think he should be in jail.
The Uh-Oh Show! is scheduled for film festival releases in December of 2009 and on DVD early in 2010. - 30542
