Charlaine Harris - Big Time Novelist Of Today

By Jo Archibald

Charlaine Harris was born on November 25th 1951 in Tunica, Mississippi. She holds the accolade of being a New York Times bestseller and has been writing now for longer than 20 years. She currently lives with her husband and three children in Magnolia, south Arkansas. Her early literary career was spent writing about ghosts in poetry, after which she wrote about teenage problems and plays. Her greatest success has come from her book writing however.

She published two mystery novels and then wrote the Aurora Teagarden Series, which saw her gain quite a bit of recognition and success. There were several books in this particular series which took her until mid 1990, and then again she came back to write more in the series in late 1990 until 2003.

From 1996 onwards Charlaine Harris then began writing the series named Shakespeare, otherwise known as Lily Bard. "Shakespeare's Landlord" was the first book from five, while "Shakespeare's Counselor" concluded the series in 2001.

Then in the same year she began to write her most loved and well known series - that of Sookie Stackhouse, or also known as The Southern Vampire Series. "Dead Until Dark" was the first and at the moment the last to be released was "A Touch of Dead", which is actually a compilation of Sookie-universe stories. The novels are based around a barmaid with telepathic powers who falls in love with a vampire. The story line is situated in a small town called Bon Temps in Louisiana. The first in the Sookie Stackhouse Series - "Dead Until Dark" - collected the Anthony Award for the Best Paperback Mystery and that was in 2001. To this day the Sookie Stackhouse Series has been released in many different countries in many different languages.

The producer, Alan Ball (famed for his production of "Six Feet Under"), approached Charlaine Harris to ask if she would be interested in allowing the series to be the basis for an HBO television production. The first of this television series was screened in September 2008 and was named "True Blood". Although "True Blood" was a little slow to really gain popularity, there has been a second series ("True Blood 2") already shot and screened, which has been received very well indeed.

A new series of books was also started by Charlaine in October 2001 called Harper Connelly, which tells of a young lady who can find dead bodies by using her clairvoyant powers. - 30542
