Do You Need A DVD Recorder Player?

VHS tapes used to be frequently used to record programs on TV. Once the DVD format became the norm at-home television recording had disappeared and been forgotten by the average consumer. It didn't help that most DVD players didn't - and still don't -- have a record function and services such as TiVo eventually became the norm in most households. However, TiVo is not free, and neither is any other DVR service. Recording your own DVDs with a DVD recorder/player is about as free as you are legally able to get.

Finding one can be difficult, especially in department stores or even some electronics retailers. DVD recording is not widely practiced because some people just don't want to purchase DVDs or keep track of how much space is left on them. Piracy got more prominent around the time DVDs really came to be common. For that reason, DVD recording is not something you hear about every day, even if you just want to record your home movies from VHS to DVD.

There are several DVD recorder players that are also compatible with VHS tapes, which makes it easy to record VHS videos to DVD format. This type of model is very useful if you have a large quantity of home movies or if you have a VHS collection that you can't bear to lose. VHS tapes do not last forever, mainly because the tape inside the casing deteriorates, but partially due to the fact that VHS players are outdated and are getting hard to find.

Just about any units that you can find which record and play DVDs are good quality models, which is because they are not all that common. Reputable manufacturers do make them and they can be found on some internet stores and even some electronics stores. These kinds of players and recorders are also getting more affordable by the year, just like DVD players. The difference is that they are often more pricey than standalone DVD players themselves. Luckily the prices of blank DVD-R and DVD-RW discs are getting progressively cheaper, especially now that Blu-Ray is making its way to becoming the standard.

A high quality DVD recorder player is a solid investment if you are looking to save a nice amount of money, especially if you want to make a new copy of your old tapes or just save your favorite TV shows. They have their definite uses and they will stay on the market for a while, but hunting down one that is worth your money can be a hassle. But a little bit of trouble for a nifty feature can be worth it. - 30542
