The Samsung UE40B7000 Our Review

By Evan Grant

Initial Views: By far the most imposing aspect of the UE40B7000 is the depth of it. Less than 1.5 inches, in fact.Samsung has done well by ensuring that everything you need is built-in in the package, not like some of its competitors who on occasion move key components out to a discrete box you have to find space for. It also looks excellent, with a good-looking black edge and a slim see-through connection between the monitor and the pedestal.

Sound Performance: As with numerous flat screen TVs the audio quality of the UE40B7000 is only ordinary. The thickness of the UE40B7000 is too small to include a passable audio system. It would be prudent to look at adding a surround audio system.

UE40B7000 Screen Quality: The exclusive promotion point of the UE40B7000 is the fact that it uses LED technology to replace the usual fluorescent tube backlighting system found in other TVs. What some reviewers haven't understood is that the screen itself still uses tried and tested LCD technology. The advantages of LEDs as opposed to fluorescent tubes are:

* An LED backlight approach uses a system of grids to produce a more uniform backlight across the screen.

* Just plasma Televisions have produced flawless blacks until now - this enables LCD ones to do so as well.

* Response times (when viewing a rapidly changing image) are faster.

* The colour array that can be displayed is better.

UE40B7000Socket connections: The UE40B7000 has all the connections to connect to other equipment and PCs that most of us are expected to need - an LAN port, 2 USB ones and 4 HDMI ports. With a separate, easily bought wireless USB stick, the UE40B7000 can get into any home wireless network and what's more, any USB memory device can be used to allow it to play nearly all multimedia file formats.

The Samsung UE40B7000 Remote: There are in point of fact two remotes. The main one curves over at one end (intended to lay on an easy chair arm?). A bit strange to hold at first, but you get used to it. The second, smaller remote simply allows volume power and channel changes.

Energy efficiency: LEDs make use of a large amount less power (between 100W and-0W) than the customary fluorescent backlighting so the TV will be cheaper to run than its competitors.

UE40B7000 Review - Wrapping up: Although having only middling audio quality, the UE40B7000 makes spectacular pictures, with deep blacks and none of the somewhat washed out looks that you can frequently get in LCD TVs. - 30542
