The Samsung UE55B7020 Television - A Review

By Katherine Bender

First Impressions: The first thing you spot is how slim the UE55B7020 is. Just more than an inch (and less than 3cm) in depth.Unlike some other manufacturers, Samsung has found room for the lot within the package - no need for a separate box. And the set looks first-class as well, with a sheer black surround and a see-through stem connecting the stand and the TV itself.

Audio Quality: This leads to a flaw familiar in recent TVs - the sound quality is only ordinary. The depth of the UE55B7020 is not ample to fit in good speakers so it would be a good proposal to plug in a separate external audio system.

Screen Performance: The difference with the UE55B7020 is that, instead of fluorescent tubes to provide backlighting, it uses LEDs. Though the backlighting technology is out of the ordinary, the UE55B7020 remains a LCD Television. LED backlighting is held to have the following benefits:

* The LED backlit UE55B7020 has an even output of lighting across its display. Fluorescent lit TVs are more poorly lit in the middle of the screen.

* As the LEDs are completely controllable and can easily be fully turned off, they can turn out great blacks.

* The response rate of the television is quicker.

* The colour array that can be shown is wider.

Socket connectivity: The UE55B7020 has all the connections to join to other appliances and PCs that the majority of us are to be expected to require - an LAN port, 2 USB ones and 4 HDMI ports. With a separate, easily bought wireless USB stick, the UE55B7020 can access any home wireless network and what's more, any USB memory device can be used to allow it to play nearly all multimedia file formats.

There are in point of fact two remotes. The main one curves over at one end (planned to place on an easy chair arm?). A tad bizarre to grasp at first, but you get used to it. The second, smaller remote simply allows volume power and channel changes.

Expense in use: The UE55B7020 consumes around 115W in use - well below the customary requirement. Less than a watt on stand by.

Summation: Although the sound performance of the UE55B7020 is not up to scratch, it outperforms its competitors, with animated colours and black blacks. The finest image quality in its class. - 30542
