Are the Denver Broncos a Real Contender?

By Bruce Levins

Few people thought the Denver Broncos would get off to such a fast start, but it happened.

Ironically, it's all happening without their long standing coach, Mike Shanahan. New head coach Josh McDaniel has overcome adversity when you consider the fact that the team lost its top quarterback and wide receiver.

Denver Broncos Coach McDaniel is the youngest coach in the NFL, and his lack of experience hasn't seemed to matter so far. The Broncos have looked great through two weeks. Even Broncos fans weren't happy with the new coach in town.

It's true that the two teams they've played against so far have been pretty weak opponents. The Browns are a cupcake matchup, and the Bengals, even when an away game, would normally be considered a pretty easy opponent too. On the other hand, Cincy just stunned Packers fans with a win at Lambeau in week 2, so maybe the Bengals are better than people thought.

Maybe this team is better than people let on, and maybe the Broncos' win in Cincinnati was more difficult than people believed it to be. The Bengals looked pretty legit to me with Carson Palmer, Ochocinco and Cedric Benson running the offense.

QB Kyle Orton is the prototypical "game manager", while he won't put up the tremendous statistical performances like Drew Brees or Peyton Manning, Orton won't lose many games either.

The team's 27-6 win against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday was highlighted by a franchise-high four sacks in one half by Elvis Dumervil.

Let's watch this team some more. They're very interesting to say the least. - 30542
